Anyway, the problem is that the configuration file the Verio setup comes with does not define the common_dir variable that the template map references.
So, in your .conf file, look for the lines you are uncommenting.. something like this:
template_map: Long long ${common_dir}/long.html \
Short short ${common_dir}/short.html
template_name: long
And change it to give the full path, probably similar to the location set in the synonym_dictionary variable. To look something like this:
template_map: Long long /u/web/youraccountname/htdig/common/long.html \
Short short /u/web/youraccountname/htdig/common/short.html
template_name: longOr you could just define a common_dir variable at the top of the file.. but this will do it too.
If you have any other questions just ask.. I'm slowly getting familiar with their botched installation of Verio that makes things 10 times harder for users than they would have been had it been installed manually by themselves.

If you haven't already, you want to change this to:
Format: <select name="format"> <option value="long">Long <option value="short">Short </select>
Then htdig will look for the "long.html" and "short.html" file in your "common" directory, as defined in the configuration file.
Thanks, Alan. I already tried this. It did not work for me. Once again, when I uncomment the appropriate lines in the configuration file, I get the correct number of pages found in the header followed by a blank results body. When I comment the lines, I get results in the body, but in the default format/style. I'm sure I'm missing something simple but can't for the life of me figure out what.
Now, Perry, since you and I are users of htdig via Verio, I'm irritated by the extremely uninformative way of initiating the indexing process, with that one button on the "Web site add-on" Web page buried in the administrators part of the site. In fact, if I invoke indexing and leave this page up, I end up getting an error message back after a few minutes and somehow aborting the indexing process--but nothing more than a single error message, no logs, etc. Have you figured out any more effective way of controlling/monitoring the indexing process?
No, I haven't--although I don't get error messages. Thanks for explaining about Verio making some files hidden and inaccessible--that explains why I couldn't make any sense of some of the posts I found in the archives.
I am coming to the conclusion that htdig is too technical for the likes of me and I should probably stick with what I have (PicoSearch). I'll give it some more effort if anyone has any further suggestions about my problems. Am I the only one that has a problem with not being able to access more than 10 pages of results from the footer?
Again, I'm new to the list so please let me know if I am not following proper etiquette.
Best; Perry
