If you're using htdig 3.2.0b5, have a look at
http://ai.rightnow.com/htdig/

"libhtdig is a selfcontained library of HtDig code. It is intended
to be called from other programs to perform the main functionality
of HtDig." sound like what you want.

If you have htdig 3.1.6, IIRC, someone also did a PHP integration.
