Apparently the machine has to have per-process limits. Do you know what a reasonable value is for HtDig?
It will depend on the nature of the documents you are indexing. When running top, I usually see something slightly under 100 MB for a dig that maintains a lot of links in memory. I would expect htdig to require less than that for more typical sites, but you will need to experiment with what you are actually indexing to get a good feel for what is needed.
