You give no detail of which package you are trying to install, nor of the computers involved, but I am guessing from the nature of the questions that you have picked up a copy of the source of htdig, and have never built any software from source before. What I suggest is that you tell us exactly what Operating System the "server" is running, and then we might be able to come up with a pre-built package that is just mouse-clicks to install (if you have the necessary permission on the server of course).
