I can see a couple of possible problems here.
The files were created by the scanner plug-in of the newly released Acrobat
4 and are version 1.3 pdf files. If xpdf really only supports version 1.2
like it says in the error message then there may be a file format
difference between the two versions.
I don't have Acrobat 4 yet but there may be an option to force it to create
version 1.2 compatible pdf files.
Also the files (the first one anyway, that is the only one I opened) were
scanned in as a graphic rather than through an OCR plug-in so that even
after I had opened one in the new Acrobat 4 reader I was unable to select
anything with the text select tool. I am not an expert on this but I think
that you are trying to index a picture.

I run XPDF version .80 on a BSDI 4.0 box. I use htDig 3.1.1 in
conjunction with XPDF to index the pdf documents. This morning I got
several of the folowing error messages from my cron:
