Actually this is what I meant when I mentioned '--enable-maintainer.'
Some packages offer that flag as a configure option to enable those
Makefile targets. Unless you specify it explicitly, you don't have to
worry about automake at all. A Makefile target is another option, for
example 'make makefiles' has been used before for similar aims.
