It's been a while since I've been on Solaris, but I know that more recent
versions support files >2GB. I believe this is also true of HP and AIX.

As for transparent compression in the filesystem, I've never been a big
fan. But I'm pretty sure there's code to do this for at least Solaris.

P.S. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there's a 'bigfile' patch for
Linux too?
