My understanding of the situation is that even including hooks like
you mention would be a problem. This is one reason the original
Apache project does not offer such hooks.
As a non-profit educational institution, you are (of course) allowed
to use the RSAref library for programs to use SSL/HTTPS. However, I
think it's much better to allow use of other, already legal,
retrieval mechanisms and point people towards them.
As a project, we have enough to do w/o worrying about patent law IMHO. ;-)
BTW, it sounds like the htnet library is basically ready for
prime-time. Gabriele, I'm going to commit the changes to Document.cc,
Retriever.cc, and Server.cc to switch to these methods tomorrow
evening. Hopefully, we'll pick up some additional bug-testing through
the pre-existing htdig test suite.
