I talked to some of the Apache developers about 2 years ago about this
very idea. At the time, I was asking because I thought it might allow
htsearch to use XSSI, mod_perl, etc. (This may work in Apache 2.0, but not
in this version.)
They said that the only gain would be in the time required to fork() the
CGI itself. Also, you'd lose the portability of the CGI since it would be
tied to one server. Granted, having a module would allow semi-persistent
caching of results. But as they pointed out, this is also possible in a
CGI.
So it's a good thought, but there are probably better ways to spend our
time.
