Phil,
IANAL, but generally (at least in the US), work you do for your employer
is considered a 'Work for Hire', and is owned by the company. Check your
contract.
On the other hand, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that your
company may be willing to share code you've written - it's a matter of
persuading them of the benefits that can be accrued.
