my preference is to keep source only in the repo, unless there is a good 
reason to keep the derivate man files (e.g. building the man pages from source 
is too complex).

AFAIK pod2man is part of perl and can be expected to be found on Linux/BSD 
systems.  I don't know about OSX.  Windows does not use/install the man pages 
anyway (which is a pity.  Maybe some Windows contributor wants to chime in 
here and do something about it).

hence, if there is no objection, I will remove the outdated man pages and 
shell script to generate them.
