User error - it seems as if I had a 32 bit parallel installation of an old 2016.0 release floating around, and I was unwittingly using that. The diagnostic warning Warning: TIFFDecoder: no TIFFTAG_SAMPLEFORMAT or TIFFTAG_DATATYPE remains, though. I have contacted the vendor (PhaseOne for Capture One Professional 8.3.4 64 bit) on this.
