My mistake - I used Make Alias and of course the resulting file was 
called Hugs Preferences alias, which doesn't work. Sorry about that. 
Renaming the alias works.

I'm planning to use MacHugs for a first-year unit with approx 300 
students - any other advice? I know, I know - change jobs ...
