Thanks for replying.

What I hear varies.  It's often a regular hum of relatively short
duration, i.e. a second or so with a similar silent gap.  However, on
occasion the hum can last for 10-15 seconds or possibly more.  We saw
this last night on the freqency analyser.  The meter would show a
response when I told the person operating it that I could hear the
noise.  I'm not sure of the scale, but there was activity possibly
from 12.5Hz up to 50Hz.  I'm not sure if they have stored the results
or not.  It wasn't an ideal time as it was around 9-10pm and my
neighbours were listening to the TV fairly loudly.

I've been told that my hearing's pretty good;).  Not sure if it's
worth insuring though.  I wouldn't mind not hearing this noise and
then I could get some sleep;)!
