I recently suggested that the reason why only some people hear the Hum is that a part of the inner ear is in a state of resonance with the energy that causes the Hum and that by disrupting this state of resonance it may be possible to give Hum sufferers relief especially while trying to get to sleep. Some sufferers have stated that running an electric fan allows them to sleep and this seemed a simple and inexpensive way to test my suggestion. I used a 6 inch diameter mains powered electric fan clamped firmly to the headboard of a bed, the purpose being to produce a vibration in the bed rather than use the fan to produce an air born sound wave, The effects were surprisingly pronounced, with the Hum and the vibrations of the fan acting together a strong neat frequency was produced similar to that heard from a twin engine propeller aircraft. This is consistent with the fact that two sources of energy are required to produce a beat, one being the fan and the other the Hum in the sufferers head. The effect was most unpleasant, it could not be endured for long and could not possibly be used as a means of relieving the Hum. However, the exercise was not a complete failure for it showed once again that the Hum originated from the electrical power supply. One further point, it was noticed that the beat frequency underwent a slow phase change which indicates that the Hum is not caused by the electrical house wiring or any local supply, the phase change indicates a connection with the ionosphere.
