Fast wavefrronts and sharp peaks are unhappy companions to the ear- so even if nothing worse is contained in hum, distortions can easily be picked up and discordant to the human ear. The 'deisel' sound of hum with a hunting tendency must have many harmonics on the non sinusoidal front which will contribute to aural discomfort, without doubt.
