The housing they were originally alloted collapsed and they were moved to tin sheds and some built wall inside while others left the slum and rented out their premises. About 2000 families many of who owned their premises were residing in EWS when the demolition started according to one of the arrested women's husband. As many of you know, one of WSS's Karnataka co-coordinators, Kaveri Indira is one of the two activists that have been put in judicial custody yesterday by the magistrate at ACM court in Parappana central jail with 19 EWS female residents for 3 day (until Tuesday) on 5 charges, including 1. rioting (loeslely translated in Kannada by Policewomen at Thyygarajanagar as "galati madiduru") 2. obstructing government officials in their duty (govt officials being police and BBMP demoition squad) 3. unlawful assembly 4. unlawful assembly with weapons (completely fabricated) and a 5th charge which I can't recall. 1 & 2 if I am not mistaken are more serious charges according to a senior PUCL member who attended the court procedings that Pushpa and I talked to. Another protest at EWS has been called by PDF, Concerns and PUCL which has been circulated by Anivar, Pushpa, Kamayani and others. PUCL had filed a petition on behalf of the residents prior to the demolition. Maithreyi, the lawyer from ALF acting on their behalf feels a surety bond from a permanent govt employee or a property owner may be needed to release Kaveri, Gee and the EWS women.
