You CAN record live mutes in pattern mode. Select the track you want to
record mutes on (in the song I'm messing with I did it on track 7, which is
a basic open/closed hi-hat pattern). Select overdub record mode, press
play, press the mute button (to get into mute mode...do this while the
recording is counting in...) and then mute to your heart's content. Stop
recording, unmute everything, and press play...voila, your mutes should
have been recorded. Beware, however, as the mute record simply erases all
note/program change/cc/etc events in the selected track, and you'll have to
do an undo to get them back. I _believe_ that one can record mutes on
multiple tracks at once in song mode  when you're recording in omni
channel, but in pattern mode you can only record the mutes on the currently
selected channel.
