RM1X OUTPUTS

Can the phones jack be used as a reliable second output for recording 
purposes? I'm running the mono/L output through an external effects filter, 
but all the ouputs on that are already in use. So was wondering about phones 
output. Also, this is probably obvious but when you remove and plug in 1/4 
inch connections and you hear all that static does that damage anything 
internally or externally?
