I wouldn't use the RM1x as my *only* source of sounds in a mix, but
there are definitely some useful sounds in the box.  You can do a lot by
playing with the effects, attack/release, filters, eg decay, velocity,
etc.  It depends what kind of music you're into, but if your friend
wants to do techno-ish music, there are enough useful sounds to sketch
out some ideas.  You can always go back and fill in your tracks with
other gear.

The people who say "never use any of the sounds in the RM1x" aren't
trying hard enough, IMO.  On the other hand, the RM1x is also good
enough as a sequencer that you could be happy never even plugging it
into your mixer.

And some of the kicks sound really nice over a big PA. :)
