My friend Len Sobeck, DJ, died today at 10:45am.
Len had finally succumbed to level 4 skin cancer, which means it had spread
throughout his body and attacked his vital organs. He was 29 years old. I
was fortunate to have spent a little time with him over the weekend, and
the experience has humbled and changed me in many ways.
He was one of the more productive house DJ's in the Los Angeles area,
bringing good times, good tunes, and good nights out to thousands of people
over the years. As a music reviewer for URB magazine here in LA, he made a
difference in the way people perceived and experienced house music, and as
a staffer at Vinyl Fetish Records he was a reliable source of good material
for many other DJ's in the area. I know a lot of people respected Len for
his dedication to the art of DJ'ing, in spite of the personal battle he has
had to fight over the years, and his strength in dealing with it in a
positive way has been inspirational, to say the least.
I'm posting this message about Len to my lists here at TekLab, not for pity
or sympathy, but to let you all know that a bright life once dedicated to
music, good times and lifting peoples spirits, has passed, and to give you
a message that I think Len would appreciate.
We folk around the world, distant in culture and space, members of the
TekLab list communities, united under the common cause of music technology,
freely giving of personal help and traders of understanding, are musicians
and artists together, and I ask that you consider a moment of peace today,
when you read this message, for Len and his family.
Then, go and produce some music and get it out there to the people who need
it. Just like Lens life as a musician and DJ, your life as a musician too,
is very, very valuable.
Take care of yourselves everyone, and get your stuff out there!
j.
