First, this isn't a "big" issue.  We're just talking.

2 branches is not good, because one will become forgotten.

2 build systems is better, but still not good because one will become 
forgotten.

I'm not happy with Scons because:

   * It has been a trial to get Scons to work with Windows
   * It has been a trial to get Scons to work with OS X
   * It has been a trial to get Scons to work with Qt
   * It has been a trial to get Scons to work with Debian (.deb)
   * It has been a trial to get Scons to work with Fedora (.rpm)
   * Scons rebuilds everything too often.
   * Scons is slow for incremental builds (change one line in
     hydrogen.cpp and wait a long time for it to re-search
     everything and calculate dependencies).

Since we had to abandon Scons to get H2 working on Windows and Mac... I 
thought we should also _consider_ abandoning scons for *nix.
