I do think too that it's better to move tmp patterns from disk to
memory.

About the virtual pattern, to be honest I discovered the functionality
while working on the code, so I only tested it once ... seems pretty usefull!

About the code, it seems to me that there is some code duplication, useless
parts, and so on. I'll check it deeper.
