I believe you're right about there being backward incompatible changes, I tried to get Hypertable running on top of 0.18 and was unable to. I'd be interested in know the estimated schedule for this too. Our Hypertable setup is pretty fragile right now because of the issue with HDFS "hiding" unclosed files, and so the timetable for migrating to 0.18 (if this problem is indeed fixed there) is a key factor for us wrt to staying with HDFS or moving to KFS.
