For as long as I can remember.  I've got a 3.3.6 machine here, and it
works.

I don't think it is a good idea.  Most UTF-8 clients don't make use of
this feature.  New UTF-8 clients should use Xft instead.

I would therefore prefer bdftruncate to stay.
