Hi, I have built i3 4.8 for Scientific Linux 6.5 (RHEL clone, so basically the same situation) and had some problems, too.
I've also read the link you sent. There is written "xcb-icccm apparently is split between xcb-util and xcb-util-wm". If I remember correctly, I also compiled "xcb-util-wm", so you might try that.
