The Department of Petroleum Geoscience at Universiti Brunei Darussalam is
now accepting applications for one (1) Ph.D. Fellowship, with preference
being given to ASEAN residents. The Fellowship is tenable immediately upon
acceptance, which is normally 3 months after application. Benefits include
all fees, research costs, a monthly stipend of B$1000 for room, meals and
other expenses, book allowance, a return air ticket to and from Brunei at
the start and end of the programme and free medical care for a maximum of
three (3) calendar years from the date of enrollment. In return, the
Fellowship holder may be required to assist with activities in the
Department for up to ten (10) hours per week. Please note that the Ph.D.
programme is also open to candidates with other sources of funding and
applicants are encouraged to submit proposals for any ASEAN-based research
within the field of Petroleum Geoscience.
The Fellowship will be awarded for a Ph.D. study of the "Sedimentology and
Stratigraphic Development of the Berakas Syncline, Brunei". The Berakas
Syncline includes a nearly 5000 m thick tidal and shoreface succession
containing reservoir-quality sandstones. Alternation of tidal and shoreface
strata reflect relative sea level fluctuations combined changes in basin
configuration as the result of episodic growth on the basin margin
anticlines. Much of the succession is exposed in numerous outcrops, making
facies and sequence stratigraphic analysis possible. The research objectives
are: 1) a detailed sedimentological study of the Berakas Syncline succession
in outcrop to characterise facies, determine their spatial relationships and
place them in a sequence stratigraphic framework, and 2) integration of the
outcrop data with offshore 3D seismic data to identify seismic signatures of
the various depositional systems. The results will be used to assess the
impact of sea level change versus tectonic controls (including growing
structures) on the deposition of fluvial, tidal and shoreface sandstones, as
a model for predicting reservoir distribution.
All candidates must be proficient in English and hold a good first degree or
M.Sc. in Geology, Geophysics or a closely related subject; petroleum
industry experience is beneficial. Additional information and applications
forms are available from: Professor Joseph J Lambiase, Department of
Petroleum Geoscience, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Tungku Link BE1410,
