Dear Geoscientists,
The Indonesian Association of Geologists (IAGI) will conduct its Annual Convention and Exhibiton at the Gumaya Hotel, Semarang, Central Java on October 13-14, 2009. A fieldtrip and a Geology course before and after the Convention will be offered to Convention participants: *1. The field trip will be on DEEP MARINE SAND OF KUTAI BASIN* (Pre Convention: October 8th-12th, 2009) *2. The Geology Course will be on CORE DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS *(Post Convention: October 14 (evening) – 17, 2009) Please do not forget to jot down this Fieldtrip and Geology Course on your agenda. *For more information, please contact:* *The 38th IAGI Annual Convention and Exhibition Committee* Phone : 021 - 837 92688 Fax : 021 - 837 92687 Email : endra.sulis...@gda.co.id / muhammad.roza...@gda.co.id / benyamin.sembir...@gda.co.id Contact Persons : M. Rozalli, Endra Sulistya, Benyamin Thank you for your kind attention Best regards, The Convention Committee ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *The 38th IAGI Annual Convention and Exhibition ** Pre-Convention Field Trip* *The Deep Marine Sand of Kutai Basin* *Fieldtrip Overview* Although the Mahakam Delta is famous for its Deltaic Complex, actually it also has deep marine sand deposits that recently have proven to be producing in the Makassar Strait deep-water Blocks. Outcrops of deep marine turbidite sand systems within the age of N2 - N8 will be visited to give the participants an overview of the deep marine “turbiditic” sands of Paleo Mahakam Delta in contrast to the shallow marine turbidites in the prodelta and shelf areas. Examples of bathyal up to pro-delta turbidite systems will be discussed with published turbidite-systems models as references. The field trip will cover the Balikpapan Bay, Sepaku District, Tenggarong, Loa Duri, Samarinda, and Samboja. A total of 11 (eleven) outcrops will be visited in 3 days, with an average of 4 outcrops per day. All of the outcrops are turbidite sandstones, comprising of outer-fan, middle-fan and suprafan facies as well as shelf and prodelta turbidites traditionally known to occur in the Miocene Pulau Balang Formation. Comparison between deep marine & shallow marine turbidites of Kutai Basin will also be highlighted. Although it will not be visited, the equivalent proximal lowstand deposits will also be discussed (infact, their outcrop ridges can be seen from one of the field-trip turbidite stops). Reservoir characters such as lateral extent vs thickness, porosity, permeability, heterogeneity, petrography, log characters, fossil assemblages, sedimentary structures and even tectonic feature association will be discussed using field sample data at outcrop localities. To ease off stress after daylight deal with the complexity of deep marine sands of Paleo Mahakam Delta outcrops, several tourism spots will be visited. On top of that, typical rock hounds dinner will also be served. This will include a visit to the “Kutai” Museum & "karaoke dinner" in Tenggarong and dine out at the world class chili-crab corner in Samarinda. A summary session will be conducted before leaving Samarinda for Balikpapan to catch the plane to Jakarta. *Date* October 8th-12th, 2009 (5 days / 4 nights) start on Thursday and finish on Monday *Venue* Samarinda & Balikpapan *Instructor* Dr. Ir. However, even your best interpretation which is based on geological information collected by the most sophisticated wireline tools can not match your best interpretation based on cores if you have them. * * *Wireline response will tell you much, but the core will tell you more.* Your best core interpretation will come from the best description. This course will improve your skill that *you can not get from any textbook and any course*. *Date* October 14 (evening) – 17, 2009 *Venue* Gumaya Hotel, Semarang *Instructor* Dr. Ir. Andang Bachtiar, MSc. *Cost** *Rp 8.500.000,-/person Registration deadline by October 5, 2009 *Who Should Attend* exploration geologist, development / production geologist, geophysicist, reservoir engineers, log analyst, petrophysicist, coal geologist & all geoscientist. *The Course participants will be provided with ** *a guide book, stationary, shirt, back pack and free lunch.
