IBM-MAIN has an alternative that's not available to most newsgroups:

If you are completely off topic, you can choose to respond to this newsgroup,
but not to this listserver.   Still use the OT: prefix as lots of us read
messages via the newsgroup, and reply to the listserver.    But don't post OT
messages to the listserver.
