Lieven,

When I converted the 3480s to 3490Es using the CA-DISK MERGE utility, I
would do 50 input tapes at a time. These tapes then went to one of five
output tapes. The output tapes were grouped by how long the backup dataset
was retained. Doing the conversion this way would took about 6-8 hours per
50 tapes. At the same time, a duplicate set of tapes were created which went
off-site. This setup was according to how the shop does business.

One could just as easily bring the input tapes in one by one and use a
single output tape and performed the MERGE that way. The utility is fairly
flexible. You can also simulate the runs if you want to get a better feel
for how many output tapes it takes before you merge the 3480's.

Neal Kostanski
