It is these days. In the good old days there was mountable DASD, and theoretically you could get multiple disks mounted on one unit. With today's non-removable DASD, the volume count doesn't work.

Volume count *does work*. It can be usesd to allocate multi-volume dataset on DASD.
We're talking about fourth parameter, not third (third is volume sequence).
