Is this tongue in cheek? The length has always been described as a halfword.

No, I just always ASSUMED that the length, while limitted to 100 bytes
in JCL, would never exceed 255 bytes. With the advent of USS File names,
I can see that my assumption wasn't valid. Mostly my programs are
controlled by card-image input now.
