There is also Science Fiction Author Piers Anthony who in one of the first books in his Xanth Series had a character write an essay which was then spell checked by a "Spelling Bee". The Bee was not happy doing the job and made sure that every word which was a homophone was spelled using a wrong word. When read out loud there was no problem - It was only when the essay was viewed that the incorrect spellings were obvious.
