We just licensed a new CA product, and I thought it might be a good time to look at bringing in MSM to install it.
I spent about half a day downloading MSM, and looking at the installation process. Seemed like it would be a while before MSM was up and doing productive work, and a bit overkill for out CA product set (<10 products), so I abandoned MSM and spent less than an hour downloading and installing the new product and current maintenance for it. Just how much time can it save? Not trashing the product, just looking for real world experiences. If I can install a new product in less than an hour, how much time can MSM save me? For me, it has really speeded things up for getting new releases or maintenance on current releases on. Not to mention, the ability to deploy those products to another site in your company. ___________________________________________ Jim Petersen MVS - Lead Systems Engineer Home Depot Technology Center 1300 Park Center Drive, Austin, TX 78753 www.homedepot.com email:jim_peter...@homedepot.com 512-977-2615 direct 512-977-2930 fax 210-859-9887 cell phone -----Original Message----- From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List [mailto:IBM-MAIN@bama.ua.edu] On Behalf Of Jousma, David Sent: Thursday, October 06, 2011 11:50 AM To: IBM-MAIN@bama.ua.edu Subject: Re: CA MSM v4 on z/os 1.9 Speaking of MSM, and having Mr, Craddock responding.... It sure would be nice if there were a happy medium between doing nothing, and installing/using MSM. It would be *really* nice if CA implemented their own order server to support SMPE RECEIVE ORDER. Jumping into MSM is not a small task, and I'm not convinced that it isn't a net increase in labor using it vs, RYO method for maintenance today... _________________________________________________________________ Dave Jousma Assistant Vice President, Mainframe Services david.jou...@53.com 1830 East Paris, Grand Rapids, MI 49546 MD RSCB2H p 616.653.8429 f 616.653.2717 -----Original Message----- From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List [mailto:IBM-MAIN@bama.ua.edu] On Behalf Of Chris Craddock Sent: Thursday, October 06, 2011 11:38 AM To: IBM-MAIN@bama.ua.edu Subject: Re: CA MSM v4 on z/os 1.9 with MSM there was a conscious decision to follow IBM support policies, which makes sense if you think about it. I have no idea whether anyone is running it in an unsupported config. I would point out that if a vendor says "release X is required", it usually means just that. You can go off and do your own thing (of course) but you should not expect too much sympathy from the vendor if your way doesn't work.
