It appears, then, that the particular value of Instant Split
lies where the target can be directed to a separate (physical)
volume, or even a remote one, to protect against physical
catastrophes as well as inadvertent harmful updates.

This would seem almost equivalent to CoW followed by a regular
copy, except for some performance advantage to Instant Split in
environments with significant update activity.
