The locution
12:00 PM
is, as posts to this thread have made clear once again, irretrievably
ambiguous. It is also subliterate.
The correct terminology is
dd:dd am, antre meridiem (before noon for Latin dropouts)
12:00 m, meridies (noon)
dd:dd pm, post meridiem (after noon)
12:00 mn, media nox (midnight)
The 24-hour clock, among its many other merits, lends itself to misuse less
readily than does the 12-hour one.
