Robert, One thing you may want to ask, do you run any file buffering software (Performance Essential and others) 'under the covers'? I have seen '(un)predictable' S0C4's with them and the particular one we work with will handle temporary files different than permanent ones. If you do you may want to see if turn it off for that step helps your problem.
