You may thank (or curse) the U.S. Federal government. They required "Posix compliance" for all computer bidders. z/OS UNIX is the outgrowth of that. I don't know, but it would not surprise me at all to find out that a number of things in z/OS UNIX are actually based on BSD. I cannot prove this, of course. Now, why is the TCP/IP stack UNIX based?
