Right, z/OS Bimodal Migration Accommodation is/was available only up through z/OS 1.4. When running z/OS 1.5 (at least not under z/VM) on a z/Architecture system it has to IPL in 64-bit mode -- that's a technical requirement at least. z/OS 1.5 can run in 31-bit mode on a pre-z/Architecture system. (It's the last z/OS release able to do so.) I very confused, though, so maybe John Chase can post a follow-up. I understand the configuration: - z/VM (with a 31-bit VM defined) - z/OS 1.5 (IPLing in 31-bit mode) - z/Architecture system Effectively z/VM is acting as the bimodal accommodation here. I assume z/OS 1.5 will IPL this way (and won't figure out what the real iron is underneath), but I don't know that for sure. What I'm really missing is what this z/OS VM is supposed to be D/R backing. Is it intended to be a D/R environment to stand in for a pre-z/Architecture system running z/OS 1.5 in 31-bit mode? In other words, is the primary system (for this z/OS) a pre-z/Architecture system? There's an end of service date coming up on z/OS 1.5 (and prior) of March 31, 2007, so another question would be whether it makes sense to create this configuration with t-minus 12 months of service life. I don't think there's a legal impediment, but I would get a second, formal opinion. - - - - - Timothy F. Sipples Consulting Enterprise Software Architect, z9/zSeries IBM Japan, Ltd.
