Ned,

We migrated from HDS to DS6800 last year.

1. FDRPAS - great product easy to use.
2. Get the Slideout PC monitor. Elso you will need a table next to it for
the monitor.
3. Get the VPN connection for alerts, failed drives, etc...IBM will mail a
new DDM (drive) and you installed it.
4. The 146 GB drives are solid, don't know about the 300 GB.
5. The FICON will blew your socks off. One of the biggest performance
improvement since going ICDA. Made sharaable accros all LPARS. Get two FICON
cards for elimination of single point of failure.
6. Use IBM TOOL Capacity Magic to select you disk configuration and plan for
Poing in time copy upfront. By mizing volume across subsystems.
7. I have only used MOD-9 so don't know about MOD-54
8. 1750-511 is our device model.

9. New issue. Use a confurable router/switch. Not the cheap plug and play
ones. Go with 3COM or CISCO.

Subject: IBM DS6000 experiences

We are considering upgrading our DASD to IBM's DS6000. Our current
environment is ESCON-attached RAMAC3. Proposed is the DS6000 and an
upgrade to FICON. (Host system is a z900)

Everything I've seen points to significantly better performance, higher
reliability and improved management. However, I'd like to verify with
installations who are actually using the DS6000. I'm particularly
interested in comments about performance, and any issues to watch for in
implementation.

Thanks in advance!
