The last time I "least expected it" was August 10,
1988, 3:20 P.M. CST. Funny how sharp my memory is
about these things. The next 6 events of this type
were expected, mostly after a longer interval than I
would have expected. I've even lost a few wagers to my
wife (i.e. gee honey, how long do think this gig will
last?) and bought a few beers to pay off.

As other posters have pointed out, the employment
contract is "at will" which applies to both parties.
Human nature begins to misinterpret this type of
contract after it's been in place for a while, say a
few years. Because it begins to resemble a
relationship, people think it actually is. We delude
ourselves into this belief by adding homey items to the
cubicle to make it look like a home, rather than the
parking place it really is. What I remind my younger
colleagues of is that the employment contract is a
commercial transaction, nothing more, nothing less. As
long at it serves the needs of both parties, it's a
good deal. Some employers can create a veneer of
"loyalty" but once some financial stress occurs this
masquerate quickly disappears.

Here, prove the concept, go ask your boss how much he
loves you and for how long.......then check if he's
looking at his shoes.

My, my. It sounds as if you are just about as loyal to
them as they will prove to be to you when you least
expect it.
