os/360 ... pcp. i don't remember that you could "sysgen" mvt until release 12.

boeing huntsville had custom modified mvt version 13 with virtual memory support running on two processor 360/67. the system didn't support paging ... but workload was a lot of long running 2250 (graphics) "jobs". mvt had a tendency to fragment storage ... and mvt applications tended to require contiguous storage allocation. use of virtual memory hardware allowed emulation of contiguous storage (even when real storage was severely fragmented).

at the univ. we didn't "sysgen" mvt until release 15/16 (i.e. there had been problems with release 15 which delayed ship ... and they eventually shipped it as combined with release 16).

some historical references:
http://www.os390-mvs.freesurf.fr/mvshist1.htm
http://mcraeclan.com/Links/Computers/IBMMainframeHistory/mvshist1.htm

the above references "sysgen" process which was typically done using the "starter" system.

at the univ, starting with release 11, I had done a lot of work for doing "sysgens" in production job stream. apart of this was that as an undergraduate, I would get the datacenter to myself on the weekends (8am sat. until 8am monday). however, related to release 9.5 sysgen, a couple of univ. employees and local ibm SEs would take a couple weekend shifts to boot starter system and do release 9.5 sysgen. i got curious and duplicated their stage1 sysgen deck ... and then started looking at what was involved in the process. basically would assemble stage1 sysgen deck ... which would "punch" a bunch about a box of cards ... that represented the "stage2" sysgen ... that actually built the new system (50-80 job steps, lots of iebcopy and iehmove steps, along with smattering of other stuff).

part of the activity was to redo sysgen so i could run it in production job stream. the other was so that i could carefully control the placement of datasets and pds members for optimal disk arm movement (in the resulting generated system).

later boeing was putting together bcs (boeing computer services) and they hired me for summer job to help set things up. i was given an management badge (that allowed me to park in "management" parking lot at boeing hdqtrs bldg at boeing field). they had installed a new 360/67 uniprocessor for running cp67 and were in the process of acquiring the 360/67s that were at boeing huntsville.

misc. past posts mentioning modifying stage1/stage2 sysgen to run in production job stream ... note previous mention about presentation made at fall68 share meeting in boston regarding running os/360 in cp67 virtual machine ... also mentions getting around 300percent increase in thrput for some typical univ. workload with the careful disk arm motion optimization.
