there are other default settings that I don't like. Autosave on, for
instance. I prefer to explicitly save rather than the default behavior of
saving whenever I press PF3. I wish there was a way to override my
defaults.

Go out to my website http://home.rochester.rr.com/pinncons and grab my
Configuring ISPF for Fun and Profit presentation. You can also customize
the ZDEFAULT edit profile by specifying it when you edit a member. Delete
the ISREDIT members in your profile dataset, build ZDEFAULT, and you can go
from there.
