Over the years I've seen a few instances where the scheduling package was the only thing that brought the IPL operator up sharp for an incorrectly input date. If you're going to depend on the system date for correct processing, you should have some "reasonableness check" in there.
I remember using a ver simple one off a GUIDE tape many, many years ago.
