That shouldn't be so.  Darren obscures the email addresses before they are
forwarded to the newsgroup.  From his  Administrivia post of 16 Oct 2003:  

"As you know, all postings to IBM-MAIN get ported to the newsgroup
bit.listserv.ibm-main. This has
caused everyone who posts to the list to start receiving large amounts of
spam. I have made a change to the postings that get sent to the newsgroup.
Newsgroup readers will notice that the email address of the poster has
been altered slightly. I'm hoping this small change will reduce the amount
of spam we all receive when we post. If the spammers figure out what I'm
doing, I'll modify the email address again or remove the email address
completely. We'll see what happens over time. Enjoy."
