The S/360 had a push button on the console labeled "External Interrupt". I don't recall ever using it (but that would have been in 1970-71).

When generating a SA DUMP IPL test you can list a series of addresses For the console it is to use. In this case, providing an "External Interrupt" by pressing a key on the keyboard wakes up the SA dump program and identifies which of the consoles is to be used for operator interaction.

I think SAPL is a VM function. That's how interpret the wording in the ICKDSF manual. It says see the VM/ESA Planning and Administration manual for more info in the SAPL.

IIRC, the 360 Interval Timer also created a "External" Interrupt.
