I worked at a service bureau in the seventies that ran, in addition to a 360/65 (later two 165s), some Digital Equipment machines. I was fascinated to note that their DASD consisted of 3330s, individually mounted, with build in controllers to make them behave like FBA drives. They were formatted to a fixed block size of 512, which wasted most of the capacity.
