We upgraded a z900 to a z9EC in Janurary. The new HMC works fine. It is a little different, but the web interface is much easier.
If you care, you should be able to have IBM install the new HMC on the 890 early. They were able to install our new HMC on the z900 so we could get used to it and to save the IOCP before the old box was replaced. I've been told that we will get a new HMC which is Linux based instead of the old OS/2 based HMC. I've heard that the Linux based HMC is "not as nice" as the OS/2 based version.
