We will be doing a "suicide swap" of our z890 (2086-A02) to a z9BC (2096-S02/T02) on 15Apr2007. I've been told that we will get a new HMC which is Linux based instead of the old OS/2 based HMC. I've heard that the Linux based HMC is "not as nice" as the OS/2 based version. Any opinions from those who have gone before?
The fonts definitely don't look anywhere near as nice on the new HMC. But, the functionality is nearly identical to the previous generation. One missing feature seems to be the ability to leave the System Activity Display running even while logged off.
Remote access is nicer because it now supports more than one remote user at a time. You'll need to make sure your browser and Java run time are up to date on any machine from which you expect to access the HMC remotely.
The biggest operational challenge is getting used to the lack of 'right-click drag' support. If you do things the way you're used to doing them, nothing happens! Then you say, "Oh yeah. I need to use 'left-click drag' to do that." Like anything, you get used to it after a while...
