In a recent note, Ed Gould said: > Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2007 11:56:24 -0500 > > > And, I wish z/OS supported volsers _much_ longer than six characters. ... <SNIP> I have heard no complaint that the 44-character z/OS limit on data set names is inconveniently large and should be decreased. I might, though, need to take refuge from tape management systems developers armed with torches and pitchforks. <SNIP> I'm sure you know that the "standard" tape labels are 80 byte records. Expansion of these to accommodate the desired function would take a buy in by many groups. Meanwhile, if you look at the VOL & HDR records, you will find that what you want is possible, its just that the records fields will have to be re-arranged. HOWEVER, "Standard" tape labels only hold up to the last 17 characters of DSN, they do not hold 44 characters. Knowing this allows one to bypass protection, unless you have a tape management product that actually KNOWs the real name.... Meanwhile, Veritas and others do their own thing. So you finally get to standards, what standards? OR, we don't have no stinking standards. We don't got to have no Stinking Standards!
